A COLLEGE TIMELINE
September
Take your SATs and ACT’s (if you have not done so already).
Narrow your list of colleges to between 5 and 10 and request admissions information.
Record all deadlines for applications, test dates,and fees.
Review admissions requirements with your counselor.
Visit as many of your final college choices as possible.
October
Ask your teachers for recommendations; give them a stamped, addressed envelope and any other required documents.
If applying for early action or early decision, be aware of your deadlines and have your SAT and/or ACT scores sent to those colleges.
Begin completing all college applications and college essays.
November
A counselor, teacher, or parent should proofread your essay and application.
Send in completed applications by Thanksgiving.
December
Have your SAT and/or ACT scores sent to the colleges you have applied to.
Request that your transcript be sent to each college from the counseling center.
Get a FAFSA Worksheet and begin gathering your necessary financial aid information.
January
Attend Financial Aid parent meeting at BHS.
Submit your FAFSA online as soon after January 1st as possible.
February
You should receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) approximately 4 weeks after submitting your FAFSA, review this report for any errors.
April
You should be receiving your acceptance/denial letters by mid-April, send proper notification to each college as to whether you wish to enroll or decline.
Once you have decided on a college, be sure to check when your deposit is due.
Set up an appointment with a college counselor to create your schedule and fill out all necessary paperwork.
May
Notify the Counseling Center of your final college choice and any scholarships/grants you have received.
After graduation, be sure to request that your final transcript be sent to the appropriate College.
Scholarship opportunities should be sought out throughout the year as they become available.
